It is time to say goodbye to winter and get your air conditioner ready.

There are a few steps you can take as a homeowner to help get your AC ready before your maintenance visit with CoolHeat.

Taking the time to complete these steps can help save you money and help prevent unexpected breakdowns and expensive repairs.

Replace The Air Filter

Your Air Conditioner requires proper air flow in order to cool your home. An old, dirty air filter isn’t going to give your Air Conditioner enough fresh air which may lead to your system not cooling your home properly, overheating or completely freezing up.

Our team recommends replacing the air filter at the very least once every three months. For best results, replace each month during the cooling season.

If your HVAC system utilizes a reusable filter ensure it is cleaned and properly dried to specifications. If you have questions or concerns about your air filtration contact our team.

The Benefits of a Clean Air Filter

The air filter, filters out dust, debris and other small particles from the air, preventing them from spreading and blown all over your home, or clogging your air conditioner preventing it from cooling your home.

  • Having a clean air filter improves the indoor air quality in your home, which is good for your health.
  • Having clean, unclogged air filters ensures proper air flow decreasing the demand on your Air Conditioning system, ensuring your system is operating efficiently saving money on energy costs.

Switch Your Humidifier to Summer Mode

Most whole-home humidifiers are able to switch from a Winter to a Summer setting. Check your humidifier and switch it to the summer setting.

During the winter months the humidifier, when the humidifier is switched to the Winter Setting, adds moisture to the air in your home. Having the humidifier switched to winter while the air conditioner is turned on will force the Air Conditioner to work harder to cool your home.

If during the winter months you are finding inconsistent humidity in your home, it may be time to consider replacing your humified or installing one if you do not currently have one.

To prevent mold or other potential health problems homes in the Ottawa Valley should maintain humidity levels between 30-50%.

Clean Around Your Air Conditioner, Take Cover Off

This time of year the Ottawa Valley can be wet, muddy and lots of debris from the fall left over. As the snow and ice met or during the rainy season your air conditioner can get covered in debris, dirt, and mud.

Animals and insects can also build nests around your air conditioner, ensure those are removed.

In order for your air conditioner to perform and cool your home you have to ensure it is free of debris and nothing is covering the unit. Having a dirty air conditioner can severely impact the performance or damage the machine.

DIY Air Conditioner Cleaning

Here are a few tips on how to help keep your outdoor air conditioner unit clean:

  • Inspect and clean debris from your air conditioner regularly, once per week
  • Remove any plants, shrubs, or other vegetation that has grown, ensure you have a 2-3 feet of clear space around your air conditioner.
  • Clear away any leaves, twigs and cut the grass around the air conditioner.
  • Use a hose to gently spray stuck on debris from the unit.
  • Brushing the fins can cause damage. It is important this is done properly not to damage the air conditioner while attempting to clean.
  • Check the level of the unit, especially if installed in the fall, or a new home build the ground may still be settling causing the unit to shift over the winter or spring thaw.

Pro Tip: Better airflow means better performance and efficiency, which will save you money. Always ensure your air conditioner is clear of debris and well maintained.

It Is Time For A Vent Check

Inspect ALL the Vents In Your Home.

Most homes in the Ottawa Valley are still using their furnace or heat pump until the warmer weather changes and becomes more consistent. The vents should already be clear and uncovered. However, it is good practice to inspect all the vents prior to air conditioner season to ensure your system has proper air flow.

Other best practices you can do include:

  • Inspect the vent for anything that may have gone into the vent, toys, clothes, rodent nests. Children love to put stuff down the vents.
  • Never place furniture, rugs, or other household items over the floor vents.
  • Do your best to keep at least a 18 inches away from the wall registers when the furniture has to be placed there.
  • Ensure nothing is covering the vents in the home.

Closing vents does not stop your air conditioner from operating, when you close vents you redirect air to the open vents. If you wish to limit or increase cooling in certain rooms or parts of your home you should consider a zoned system.

Always remember limiting air flow to your air conditioner will cause it to have a lower performance and increase the chances of breakdowns.
